Mission Statement

The members of The Literacy Connection strive to build a community of scholar-teachers who support, share, publish, and disseminate professional information and engage cooperatively in workshops, curriculum development, evaluation and research activities.  We also seek to foster educationally sound practices among teachers, parents, policy makers, and others who are involved and interested in literacy matters.

Publication

The Literacy Connection has authored
Reading and Writing, Where It All Begins: Helping Your Children at Home, first published in 1991 and revised in 2004. A Spanish version has also been published. Proceeds from the sale of the booklet support professional development workshops. Information on how to purchase the booklets is on the publications page of this website.

Professional Development

The Literacy Connection (TLC) is a non-profit (501c3)  teacher support group founded in 1982 by five teachers. Our supporters include teachers, administrators, parents, and others concerned with literacy education.  Each year TLC presents professional development opportunities for Central Ohio educators. We invite celebrated educational authors, who have championed literacy practices, to share work, their thoughts and their hopes for teaching and learning in today's classrooms. Speakers through the years from 1987 until 2003 have included, among others: Donald Graves, Yetta Goodman, Marie Clay, Moira McKenzie, Charlotte Huck, Ron Hirschi, Arnold Adoff, Gay Su Pinnell, and Evie Freeman. In 2003 we began our study book model for professional development. To view our history of presenters from 2003 until the present click here.
