The Literacy Connection program for 2022-2023 features John Schu. His recently published book, The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading Life is a celebration of the ways we define, revise and imagine ourselves through literacy, a celebration of the way we connect to others and build community through reading, a celebration of children, authors, illustrators, teachers, librarians, books, and readers---and, ultimately, a celebration of hearts and the stories they hold dear.

“Stories affirm our experiences. They challenge our comfort zone. They give us space to hibernate and pull us out of our isolation when we need to be reminded we aren’t alone.”

Ohio Department of Education: The Writing Revolution Book Study (Summer 2022)
Join the Ohio Department of Education for a summer virtual book study based on The Writing Revolution. This book study is an opportunity for educators across the state to collaborate, brainstorm and discuss ways to support students with explicit writing instruction.
Participants will need to secure their own copies of the text and may attend a single session or all the sessions. All sessions are free and will be recorded and posted for viewing. The first meeting was an organizational meeting that occurred on May 18. Teresa Castellaneta, EdD, English Language Arts Consultant in the Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies, assures me it is not too late to join this study. All information and the recorded organizational meeting are posted on the Resources for English Language Arts webpage.

The Literacy Connection Booklet:
Reading &Writing: Where It All Begins - Helping Your Children At Home
A must have book for parents of young children including preschoolers and kindergartners. We need to help our potential elementary age children with the skills that lead to success as readers and writers. This booklet, published by The Literacy Connection in English and in Spanish, highlights many natural, everyday opportunities parents have to talk, tell stories, and share books with their children. These practices make a significant difference in learning to read and write.
The booklet was written by Dr. Moira McKenzie, Dr. Martha King, Peggy Oxley, Lynda Mudre, Jean Sperling, Kathleen Taps, and Nancy Blume. The cost is $2.00 per copy and is available upon request. Please send an email to Kathleen Taps at ktaps@icloud.com. Shipping and handling costs will need to be determined.
