Teaching With Intention:

Defining Beliefs, Aligning Practice,

Taking Action, K-5

Debbie Miller taught and learned from children in the Denver Public Schools for thirty years. She is the author of Reading with Meaning: Teaching Comprehension in the Primary Grades (2002) and Teaching with Intention: Defining Beliefs, Aligning Practice, Taking Action (2008), both published by Stenhouse.  She and her students are also featured in the video series Happy Reading! and The Joy of Conferring.  Debbie now presents workshops across the country and works extensively with schools and districts on long-range planning and development of literacy initiatives. She worked for many years with the Denver-based Public Education and business Coalition (PEBC) and has been an adjunct professor at the University of Denver and Regis University.

Effective, intentional teaching begins with a strong set of beliefs, but even the best teachers, including Debbie Miller, struggle to make sure that their classroom practice consistently reflects their core convictions.  In Teaching with Intention, Debbie shares her process of defining beliefs, aligning practice, and taking action to ensure that children are the true beneficiaries of her teaching.

In this yearlong study, participants will read and discuss Debbie Miller’s newest book, Teaching With Intention (Stenhouse, 2008). Participants will meet to discuss how the book is changing their practice throughout the year.  At the end of the study, Debbie Miller will work with teachers in the study group.  She will explore with us ways to align your practice with your beliefs.

The program will consist of:  two after school meetings, at which snacks will be provided;  a full day that includes Debbie’s demonstration teaching in a primary classroom and an intermediate classroom followed by time to discuss what the participants observed; and a full day general session in which she will further address her beliefs about aligning practice and beliefs.  One semester of Ashland University credit will be available for the completed study group requirements.  There will be two smaller geographic meetings between the first two general sessions for those enrolled for Ashland University credit.

Those enrolled for credit must be present at the opening meeting to receive their free copies of Miller’s book, must attend all sessions, and must complete a classroom project related to the book.  They will need to stay one half hour after the first meeting to receive details about the study group requirements.  Instructors for the course are Carol Price, retired Coordinator of Language Arts Curriculum for Worthington Schools who serves as a literacy consultant for several central Ohio districts and Marlene Beierle, retired Language Arts Curriculum Coordinator for Westerville Schools who is working on her doctorate at The Ohio State University.

The cost for those attending all four sessions will be $100.00.  There will be an additional charge for university credit, and the participants attending all four sessions and/or enrolled for credit will receive a copy of Debbie Miller’s book free of charge.
