On Saturday, October 2, 2010, 8:30 A.M.-3:00 P.M., The Literacy Connection will host Christian Long, educator, school planner, and passionate advocate for innovative learning communities, in a program designed for K-6 educators on 21st Century School and Classroom Design.
This day-long session is designed to highlight the importance of design and rethinking learning environments as we consider ways to meet the needs of students today and in the future. Participants will be invited to explore the potential of designing strategic spaces for elementary learners with an eye on digital literacy.
In an effort to develop welcoming 21st Century learning environments for our younger students, this daylong workshop will include:
• identifying the impact environment has on younger learners
• strategic school design patterns/principles to support learning
• rethinking spaces for 21st Century learners + digital literacy
Morning session:
• Part 1: Identifying school design patterns/principles + showcasing innovative learning environment case studies geared towards younger learners. Format: Presentation to audience.
• Part 2: Defining ‘digital literacy’ and learning for younger learners in the 21st Century. Format: Presentation to audience followed by audience brainstorming.
• Part 3: Identify the team/group challenge for the afternoon --> Create 21st Century learning classroom. Format: Challenge by presenter followed by brief team/group brainstorming session.
Afternoon session:
• Part 4: ‘Design’ workshop --> Create 21st Century learning classroom. Format: Short presentation/challenge followed by team/group work to create a ‘sketch’ solution to challenge specifications.
• Part 5: ‘Design’ critique. Format: Teams/groups present to the large group and presenter; audience and presenter feedback.
• Part 6: Identify common themes and resources for future research. Format: Presentation to audience.
Christian Long, founder of Be Playful Design and previous President/CEO of DesignShare, holds a master’s degree in education, with a concentration in school design, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, as well as a bachelor’s degree in English and a certificate of secondary education from Indiana University (Bloomington). Christian speaks nationally and internationally on topics ranging from emerging trends in education to innovative school planning practices. His research focus is on making connections between emerging technology, educational trends, and school design.
